On Wednesday 29 November 2017 the IHR Public History Seminar & the London Centre for Public History and Heritage proudly present:

Dealing with Divided Pasts: Doing Public History in Northern Ireland

Dr Olwen Purdue (Queen’s University Belfast)
Chair: Dr Edward Madigan (Royal Holloway, University of London)

This paper will explore practice and teaching of Public History in the post-conflict context of Northern Ireland. It will explore some of the challenges of engaging in Public History in a region where the prevailing historical narratives are contested at the most basic level and ask to what extent the public use of history plays a part in reinforcing divisions? But it will also look at the important role public history plays in disrupting dominant narratives and opening up space for dialogue, thus encouraging better understandings of different perspectives on the past.

5:30pm, Athlone Room (102), Senate House.
